Prepare to be captivated by the exceptional level of detail and clarity that brings images to life with remarkable precision. In this review, we delve into the details that set the Dell UltraSharp U3224KB apart, elevating it as a powerhouse for professionals in search of top-tier performance and versatility.
1. Basic Specifications
Native Resolution
6K 6144 x 3456 at 60 Hz
6K resolution provides an exceptional level of detail, surpassing the capabilities of 4K displays. It is commonly used in high-end cameras for video production, allowing content creators to capture footage with incredible sharpness and flexibility for editing purposes.
While 6K monitors are not as widespread as their 4K counterparts, they are gradually becoming more accessible to professionals who demand the utmost precision and detail in their work.
Optimal Aspect Ratio – 16:9
When referring to monitors and displays, the aspect ratio indicates how the width and height are related.
The 16:9 aspect ratio is the most prevalent standard for modern displays, including HDTVs and computer monitors.
This aspect ratio is ideal for multimedia consumption, gaming, and movie-watching, as it provides a more immersive and cinematic experience. The wide horizontal space allows for better utilization of screen real estate, making it popular for multitasking as well.
Display size has always been dependent on personal preference.
Although size isn’t always the determining factor, the general recommendation is to opt for monitors that are 27 inches or smaller when using Full HD (1080p) resolution.
For 1440p resolution, it is advised to choose monitors larger than 27 inches.
When it comes to 4K resolution and beyond, it is recommended to consider monitors that are 32 inches or larger.
Renowned for their exceptional color accuracy, wide viewing angles, and good overall image quality. With IPS technology, each pixel is aligned horizontally, ensuring vibrant colors and minimal color shifting when viewed from different angles. These panels are ideal for professionals working in design, photo editing, or content creation, as they offer accurate color representation.
However, IPS panels generally have a slower response time compared to TN panels, which can result in motion blur in fast-paced gaming scenarios.
Higher refresh rates result in smoother visuals, which is particularly noticeable in fast-paced content and gaming.
While a 60Hz refresh rate is sufficient for everyday tasks, I expected more from a 6K Resolution Luxury Monitor of this class.
Response Time
- 5ms (Gray-to-Gray Fast)
- 8ms (Gray-to-Gray Normal)
The response time of monitors refers to the duration it takes for a color transition to occur.
Typically, it is quantified in milliseconds (ms) and is measured as the time required to switch from black to white and then back to black. However, there are instances where gray-to-gray (GtG) or solely black-to-white transitions are considered.
sRGB 100%
sRGB is recognized as the most important standard for day-to-day activities of the average consumer.
DCI-P3 99%
DCI-P3 targets what you see in cinemas. Monitors with high DCI-P3 Percentages usually have more vibrant colors and saturation, best suited for HDR content.
Rec. 709 100%
Rec. 709 is a standard that defines the color space for high-definition television (HDTV). Only important for Media Content focusing on the Rec 709 Color Gamut.
Brightness 450 cd/m²
Measured in units called nits (cd/m²), it refers to the intensity of light emitted by a monitor.
A higher brightness level generally results in a more vibrant and vivid display.
2000:1 / 2000:1 (dynamic)
Contrast ratio refers to the difference in luminance between the brightest white and the darkest black that a monitor can produce. It determines the level of detail and depth in an image.
However, manufacturers have also introduced dynamic contrast ratios, which use local dimming or backlight adjustments to enhance contrast levels dynamically. While dynamic contrast ratios might sound impressive on paper, they can sometimes lead to inconsistent black levels and loss of detail in certain situations.
2. Design & Build Quality
Tilt Angle : -5/+21
Swivel Angle : 60º
Rotation Angle : 180º
Height Adjustment : 6.3″
Thin Bezels on the side with an obnoxiously thick bezel on top together with the webcam.
The material quality of the monitor is excellent, featuring robust silver plastics that do not easily bend and give the appearance of genuine metal. However, I did notice a minor flaw: the plastics in the bottom left and right corners of the monitor were too flexible and produced a creaking sound when handled in that area. Although it likely doesn’t affect functionality, it’s disappointing to observe such an issue at this price range.
A sturdy stand ensures that the monitor remains firmly positioned on a desk. Despite its compact base, it has a flat profile, allowing you to make use of the desk surface it occupies. This is a preferable design compared to high-end monitors that utilize wide, tripod-style stands commonly seen on LG and Samsung displays.
VESA Mounting Interface : 100 x 100 mm
3. Display Performance
HDR600
HDR-600 refers to a particular variant of HDR, indicating that the display is typically compatible with HDR content and has a maximum brightness of 600 nits.
Nevertheless, from a technical standpoint, it is an unspecified specification since no tests have been conducted to validate its accuracy.
- NVIDIA G-SYNC : None
- AMD FREESYNC : None
Not Applicable
We generally test for input lag and gaming performance, however monitors of this class, is generally not used by gamers.
Otherwise the lower refresh rate and response time may be a deal-breaker for users who are looking for a 6K Resolution Monitor to game on.
Response Time can be configured to Fast Mode where the response time is reduced from 8ms to 5ms.
4. Price and Value
The Dell Ultrasharp U3224KB is available for purchase at the price of $3,199.99. While this may seem significantly high, it is not an unprecedented price point.
Considering there are no other 6K options available in the market except for Apple’s $5,000 Pro Display XDR, Dell basically has the freedom to set the price as it pleases.
It’s definitely more affordable than Apple’s 6K XDR Display.
However, like I mentioned earlier, there are no other 6K Monitors to compare against. Furthermore, at this stage, the only users of a 6K Monitor are mainly the professionals who produce and work on 6K Resolution content, which makes the discussion of value proposition meaningless.
The Dell Ultrasharp U3224KB is an outstanding monitor that offers an incredibly sharp 6K display, a convenient webcam and microphone, and a versatile USB hub. However, when compared to 4K alternatives, its overall image quality and range of features may not be as competitive.
While its resolution is impressive, the U3224KB falls short in terms of contrast ratio and HDR performance when compared to similarly priced options like the Asus ProArt PG32DC.
